The box in my 340 car is 30+ years old...that's how long I've owned the car. It might even be original. Do the fast ratio boxes have any identifying numbers? It's takes 3 turns lock to lock. Has numbers stamped deep on it, definitely not a replacement box. Thanks in advance..

Original quick ratio steering boxes have a raised β€œTA” in the casting. Pic from the web.

Not enough info......

Make & model of car?

Fast ratio boxes were available in manual & power for different years / models.

Sounds like fast ratio box to me. I had a '66 Barracuda that came with a standard ratio manual box, which was close to 5 turns lock to lock. I bought a fast ratio 16:1 manual box and it looked exactly the same on the outside, but it had a little over 3 turns lock to lock.

'67 is an abbreviation of 1967
67' is an abbreviation of 67 feet
They are not interchangeable.

up up up 5 turns std. box, 3 turns quick ratio. not sure if a Std box could be converted with a gear swap shruggy

Firm feel sells a kit to convert from the factory 24:1 ratio to a 20:1 or a 16:1. It was very easy to do.

Thanks guys. It's a 72 Demon 340 car. Seriously doubt it was ever replaced or upgraded.

It would have been an upgrade / modification, Chrysler sold assemblies & kits;

Nope. I ordered a '69 Barracuda with fast steering back in the fall of 1968 and still have it. There's no "TA" on the casting. It does have a green paint daub and some stenciled numbers/letters: "E0919G".

Here's the original factory green paint daub before restoration.

Floyd forgot to put "Power Steering" quick ratio boxes had T/A cast on them. Manual boxes didn't have external marking that I know of but I could be mistaken on that.

The standard power steering boxes were 3.5 turns lock to lock. The T/A boxes had modified stops inside to make them 2.5 turns lock to lock. It is still the same turning ratio but the internal stops prevent it from rotating more than 2.5 turns.
To make the T/A box power steering cars car turn the wheels to the full amount it also had have the longer pitman arm.
Less turns and longer arm made the wheels turn the same angle as the standard power steering boxes.

I always felt the T/A boxes were a bandaid approach to faster steering. l think the engineers did the manual boxes correctly by changing the turn ratio and not slapping on a longer pitman arm and limiting the rotations. Kinda hokie,, but I still have one for my Challenger.

Good detail on those pics. up
