I am looking for advice and/or tips on restoring an E-Brake Pedal Assembly. My assembly is in excellent condition, but the previous owner painted it entirely black. I am considering doing a "mild" restoration myself. Basically making it look like how they were originally. I don't know if it's really worth all the trouble of disassembly, bead blasting, cleaning, painting and reassembly since most of the assembly (except for the pedal/arm) is hidden behind the kick panel. Has anyone done a restoration of their own assembly themselves? It does not look like a simple process of disassembly. If you did your own, did you disassemble/reassemble it, and if so how? Any tips, advice, suggestions, and especially photos are appreciated. 1st two photos are my assembly; last three photos are of other's restored pedal assemblies. Thanks.

Hey Guys,
Just thought I'd post an update. I decided to try and do this myself. I stripped off the paint, and wire wheeled (+ dremel w/small wire wheel, and scouring pad) to remove the mild surface rust. I think it came out pretty clean. I'm just going to spray it to "look" factory. Lucky for me, I can still see the original "line" where the pedal arm was dipped in black. Unfortunately, I realized as I was working on this that there was no parking brake switch when I took the assembly out of the car (thanks previous owner). Does anyone know where I can get one, and where/how in the wiring harness is it connected? Thanks.

Is there any difference between these two switches, other than what appears to be different part numbers? (Part description is above each photo). Thanks.

Well ...... I thought I'd post an update on this. Here is the "restoration" I did on my E-Brake Pedal Assembly (I use the term "restoration" lightly). I got a NOS switch (I know the nut is not correct), painted the body using Rustoleum stainless steel, masked and painted the pedal arm semi-gloss black, installed new pedal bumper, and release lever bushing, BRAKE RELEASE handle was detailed with fresh paint for the lettering, etc, etc.

I just stopped by to see how things are going with your Challenger. Sorry I can't be of much help since I'm an A body guy. Your e brake assembly looks nice. I love your drop top.....very cool!

Only thing I would have done differently would be remove , straighten and have the release rod replated.
The release rod is very visible once installed

The release rod needs to be straight as it travels thru the original plastic guide. (appears missing)
Your rubber gromet will not last very long as the rod will tend to pull it out of the hole its in.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize mine was not correct. I really don't want to have to take out the assembly to do this, but I suppose I could try straightening the rod with it mounted in the car. Is the rod supposed to be straight (starting from the handle all the way back to where it attaches at the rear)? As you might be able to see in my photos, mine has a couple of bends in it (from the handle to where it goes through the grommet). I did spray silicon lubricant in the grommet hole, and the rod moves very smoothly through it without grabbing it. I had to replace the plastic one that was there because it was in really rough shape.

I think I have a 1970 E body park brake assy . I'll dig it out tomorrow am and snap off a picture or 2

The one I posted above is 1968-69 B body

Thanks. I think I got the answer to my question. Here's a photo I had saved of someone else's assembly. The release rod has the same two bends that mine has. So I just need to try and straighten the portion starting from the grommet toward the back.

Hi, I know this thread is a few years old but it discusses exactly what I am attempting to restore. The parking brake release rod passes through a little plastic bushing and I am not understanding how this very rigid little plastic bushing is installed into the brake assembly. I bought this nice kit with the two springs and the bushing. The small bushing is very hard plastic and with the rod out of the way I just don’t understand how it is to be installed in the bushing hole without damaging the bushing or the bushing hole. Maybe it is so simple to install, that’s why I can’t figure it out. If anyone would give me a little advice, 😊

What i have done is to remove the release rod from the lever. Grind off the pivot....
Straighten and replate the rod.
Strip the parking mechanism and repaint
Replace the rod, spring, guide/bushing and create a new pivot for the rod at the lever. (I used a solid rivet and placed a small weld over the end and finished it off)
Attach the switch (make sure there is paint removed so it grounds correctly)
Don't forget the little extension spring on the lever pawl
Add the handle

Switch...i feel like i saw a post where there was a GM parking brake switch that was basically the same...like from a mid-60's Pontiac/Oldsmobile??
