What is the adjustment for the low reverse band on a 1976 slant six 904 transmission?

The book says 7 1/2 turns for a 1974-'76, and 3 1/4 turns for a 1968-'73.

What is the difference between the years on these bands? 7 1/2 seems an awful lot.

my 77 chry shop manual shows 7 turns backed off from 41 inch lbs(slant 6 w 904)for the low/reverse(internal)band as opposed to the usual figure of 72 inch lbs & 4 turns for a 318/360(1977) from 72 inch lbs. EDIT the kickdown (front) band is 2 turns(back from 72 inch lbs) for /6/318/360(2 & 4 bbl on the 360) in 1977

and as far as the bands, i beleive they changed the way the band is made.. but not positive..but im sure a trans guy will clear this up..

here are the specs from my manual as well. Some of the web sites i listed above (TCI) gives different specs depending on the type of band you are using.Maybe that will give you the info you need.

from my 72-79 manual, low and reverse band adj.Tighten the adjusting screw to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

Fig. 2: Low-reverse band adjusting screw location

Back off the adjusting screw as follows:

A-727-2 turns

6 cly through 73 A-904T/A-999-3 1/4 turns, 74 and later41 in pounds then back off 7 turns

so when that said 74 and later

41 inch pounds back off 7 turns

that would cover an 84 904 lock-up as well?

any one with an 84 book?

7 turns just seems to be a lot

what happens if its not turned out that many times?

I would go 2 to 2.5 turns from 72 ILBS.

Keep in mind that there are two different style rear bands, the solid (single wrap) and the split (double wrap). The latter usually needs a looser adjustment (more turns out)
