I used to live very close to Edwards Air Force base and can remember hearing about Pulse jet technology in the late 1980s and early 1990s, our country was working on developing those type of engines to be used in very high-altitude spy planes which back then were call "Aurora" spy planes.
I believe that program got drop in favor of satellite spying
