Does anyone use smoke with cylinder head flow testing to observe the flow patterns? If so what do you use to generate the smoke? Thanks, Joel

there used to be a simple smoke stick that could be introduced in the air flow. we used to use them at work. i've always thought a smoke test would make sense because it will give a visual on air flow but not sure if anybody does it. But the smoke may not act the same as the atomized fuel, so its hard to tell if that is really what is going to go on.

How about a fog machine? vaporized water is much closer to fuel than smoke They are much cheaper than they used to be That's a great idea. I actually have a fog machine that I bought for fogging the inside of a building with moldicide when I was doing a mold abatement. I'm going to try it!

I imagine it's very messy, but I have read in various discussions of guys like Darin Morgan, Chad Spier and Curtis Boggs spraying dykem in the air near the head whilst they have the flow bench running. The dykem sticks to the port and chamber as the air goes through it.

Maybe my Dad will chime in here with who did the work. My W2 heads were "wet flowed" by someone many years ago. If I remember right he was unhappy with the results and didn't charge my dad for the port work that had been done. Fast forward to 2015 we sent those heads and block etc to shady dell to be machined and all Ryan did was touch the heads up a little and they flow like 318@.700 or something near that. The motor is 7 years old now and makes around 600HP with 10:1 compression on 91 octane so they could never have been all that bad? So as wet flow this guy deemed them junk, Ryan deemed them just fine through standard methods, and they perform well. Sounds like drag racing to me

He raced a Dart in IHRA's Top Stock at the time in Rod Shop livery. Vance has/had a Wet Flow bench. He was unhappy that he could not keep the heads from getting turbulent at higher RPMs. Like Clark said Ryan either was not concerned or fixed them.

If not mentioned already, Mike Chapman used smoke testing before wet-flow testing became more accessible.
