I just had this idea, more than likely it's already been thought about though.

How do you keep the tapered joint from sticking together over the years ?

Would a thin layer of something help keep it from getting so stuck ?

I thought about teflon tape, maybe saran wrap ?

I just replaced the original tie rods on my 51 Plymouth. A few whacks with the hammer and they popped free. Of course, I don't live where they salt the roads and neither did the Plymouth.

Nothing is supposed to go on the tapers, unless you want them to turn in the hole and waller it out.

Yup they're supposed to be a really tight fit to do the job they are supposed to do.

I've got a quality one of these, probably 20 40years old (*%#@, I'm getting old), that's NEVER failed to pop one loose. Usually just put tension on it and give it a whack with the purse and they fall apart...

Yeah, I know if the taper shaft turns then you can't tighten the nut.

Grrrrrrr

Nuthinbutmopar, that Harbor Freight thing looks like it would bend / crack. It works though ?

I have one like that from harbor freight but it was part of a front end kit. I just tighten it till they pop. Just make sure the threads a lubed with good oil or grease. Most people don't lube their tools. I've had it close to 10 years and was just using it 2 weeks ago, still going strong.

use some never seize, I would think that would be the best thing to do, at least that is what I used. Stayed tight enough in the taper to tighten the nut. How much it will help, I dont know. I doubt I will be the one to take it apart again if it ever needs to come apart.

I'm with you up With racing motorcycles and building them for decades and most having taper fit ignition flywheels using ANYTHING on the taper other than a perfectly clean, grease, oil, etc., free fitment would be a sure chance of failure. There are tens of thousands, make that billions, of ball joint tapers that are fit/installed without anything but a clean, grease and oil free surface for a reason. Get the right tool(s) such as a puller, fork, etc., or the best a BFH and leave the taper clean, it's the way it's supposed to work. twocents

nothing on a taper fit, ever. you may be able to get the retaining nut tight, but whatever you put on the taper will eventually work it's way out of the joint and wooly out the taper and ruin both parts.
a clean, grease/oil free mating surface only.

If there tightened to the proper torque they'll come apart easier.

Their design to not hurt you if they come loose, DON"T use anything to not allow them to get real tight on the interference fit tsk twocents
I use a pickle fork on them and on tie rod ends hammer up scope
How often will you remove them? work whistling grin

71 gtx 471,

You know, for some reason I never thought about a torque spec for all those taper joints. Out comes the Manual.

I'll have to politely disagree on the

part. I've had a few heavy handed employees that used that approach and it sometimes resulted in damaged/broken tools frown Kudo's on the greasing though wink beer

They pop with an open end wrench with not too much torque. I've never had to tighten it very much. Have you ever done it? Its nothing and I've done it hundreds of times. shruggy Maybe the employees are even using them right.
