Picked up my r5p7 last week. Had hopes. Of taking it to drag week. So far it impresses me. Made 813 hp. Its only a 11.1 357. I really need to get it in the car and see how it works out.

That is very good!

Tell us a little more about the engine.

Did you go with wet sump?

Did you build it or buy it running?

Who were your parts sources?

It is dry sump. Still has the circle track cam 740 lift not sure of duration. I had bought 2 engines. The 1st was for arringtons auction was in there office as a display had a lot of new parts but was just a propped up display. The 2nf i actually bought off here. Was complete except pistons. It was a old gasoline alley Wayne Jessel engine. I met a guy Danny Glad from Glad precision machine in virgina. Initially i was looking for parts but ended up having him do all the work. I had issues with my block and its now mostly Dannys parts. I don't think i could have built anything comparable for a better deal.

A friend of mine had one of the old Petty truck series engines on the shelf and for years I tried talking him into putting it into an old Pro-stock chassis he had in the shop with a Nash 5-speed. The chassis was originally set up with a Lenco so the conversion would be pretty easy. The way those engines scream it only makes sense to put one in front of a 5-speed box where it can stay up on the pipe during the run.
Should be an awesome ride up

What kind of issues did you have with the block?

The block was cracked and repaired coolant passage to the outside near the oil.pan rail. It must have froze at some point because the water manifold was also cracked. The it was welded and held untill it started making power then it leaked. Tried to epoxy it and it broke on both sides of the epoxy. On r5s the water pump goes in the bottom of the block and the jacket is shaped like a cone to evenly distribute coolant. It cant really be filled to fix it because would fill the passage right up. The other block that i have has deck plugs in it. R5s are open decks this one is closed now. I think it would be good for boost but im told not good to drive 1000 miles.

I thought about filling the deck on my blocks, but decided against it. I've got two virgin early blocks that I am hoping to get started on this year some time

I still have the nascar cam in it. Learned that basically the roller ones are all around .750 lift older ones have around a .440 lobe newer have a .350 ish with a much bigger rocker. Also learned have to watch out for what cam gear it has on the back there where some different ones. Engine guy was very knowledgeable with r5 and r6s has a few dozen of them around his shop he had worked for Arrington for years and was involved with alot of the development. He had told me there is probably 25 hp in a purpose built cam but its going to be ruff on the valve train. I figured they had spent more money developing this stuff then i will probably ever make in my life why try and reinvent it. Would be different if i did not have to drive it track to track.

Great, thank you. You have a great build there. Seems hard to beat the fun/money spent factor.
