Have you eve tried finding out what your car likes for shift RPM at the races ? If not you should, try 5000 RPM in 1st and 2nd, then 55000 RPM in both and then 6000 RPM in both. If it goes faster in the 330 and 660 times shifting it higher then try 6500 and up until it starts to slows down twocents scope

This.

Something is amiss here, as that car should be running better than what you're posting as is. Would be very curious to know what the air conditions were that day as well. I'd spend a good weekend going over the car, and fine tuning what you have, before I started throwing money at it.

Double this.

It's probably fair to assume that it does not have 10:1 compression ratio, as no piston exists to give that, unless someone worked pretty hard at it, and used 915 heads.

Up in Wisconsin, so the DA was probably not too bad.

If he's shifting a 383 at 5300 rpm, he's probably leaving a bunch of HP/mph on the table.

Then again....... it could have a fast rate hyd cam in it, and isn’t very happy at anything much over that rpm.

But I’m sure a few runs down the track would answer that question.

Yeah, I always enjoy these discussion. I find I learn a lot. The big one is more seat time. I plan on trying to run it this weekend and vary the shift points. It will probably be helpful to save the time slips so we can analysis it. Anyway rain in the forecast Friday thru Sunday with a nice balmy 87. My hope is stuff won’t get wet until afternoon on Saturday and I sneak down to union grove in the morning.

With the mild gearing, you should be able to spend enough time in each of the lower gears to be able to determine if/where it’s starting to lay down...... or if it will easily rev high enough to reach or exceed the optimal shift point.

I find 2nd gear is usually the easiest for me to tell when it’s either flattening out, or nosing over.

So let’s say I go with a nice head upgrade and like comp xl274 cam, or custom grind from Dwayne , am I restricted too Stealth heads or can I go with an eddy or sidewinder head..? The angled plugs give me pause.. This thing has a lot less engine bay then my previous B bodies.

The 84cc Edelbrock E Street heads have straight plugs and flow more than the Stealths for about the same price when all is said and done.

My old 383 Dart.

Stock 383 block and pistons and crank and rods that I rebuilt. I knurled the pistons and actually honed the cylinders a bit oversize to be true round since I used the stock bore pistons. File fit the pistons for .0015 to .002 clearance and used .005 over rings that came out at .022 eng gap.

452 heads I did some mild bowl blend porting on and cut them a bit for a true 9.5 comp. MP .484 hyd cam on a 104 ICL.

Stock rockers and I used some .015 shims to get the lifters centered so they did not push down to far with the heads milled.

RPM intake and a 750 Holley DP.

CPPA 2" headers and 3" exh with Ultra-Flow mufflers

Stock dist I recurved with the MP orange ECU

stock 727 with TA reverse manual V/B and Turbo Action tight 3000 10" converter.

8-3/4 rear with 3.91's and a McCreary G/60-15 tire.

Car weighed about 3640 lbs with driver.

Best et was 12.31 @ 110. Would always run 12.50's at 108 or better on normal summer days.

It was a nice running street car for the mild 383. Ron
