Hi guys, I figured I would get advice from the experts I have a very nice 1969 Dart that is a mild build 383 10:1 motor, Hughes cam (223/228 @.50 .506 lift with 1.5 rockers) headers, torker intake with Holley EFI, stock mopar heads.headers are 1 7/8 hooker one 3 inch collector 3:55 gears, sure grip.. 727 with fairly stock stall. car runs with 13.65 at 100 mph. ( which i think is pretty decent, but everyone would like to go faster) I am wondering where to go next. I was thinking about a nice head, like sidewinders built to spec the cam, or maybe a bigger stall? Anyway, I am wondering about suggestions. Thanks Mike

What heads are on it now? Have they been gone through?
Is it spinning now? What are the 60’ times like? 100mph is good for a very low 13.
How sure are you about the “10:1”?
If the heads are fresh........ I’d suggest having a little porting done, swap to a solid lifter cam, more stall. At that point you’ll need some sticky tires if you don’t already have them.

Good morning Dwayne,
I hoped you might say hi! You custom built a cam for my old 70 Coronet with a 446 in it, and it got into the 12’s without breaking a sweat! I loved that cam!
Anyway, these are basically stock heads.. the 60’s think were 2 ish with a 255/60/15 Drag radial. Any concerns running a solid cam with the EFI?

Which stock heads?
There are no issues running a solid cam with the EFI.

Okay.....452’s.
Very easy to make a worthwhile flow improvement for that type of combo with those heads.
If the heads need a complete overhaul, then it makes sense to just buy new heads. But, if those heads are still pretty fresh, they will be worth spending some $$ on them for a little porting imo.

get the 60's down...
2.0 is 14+ et 60's It's a 12 second car tied up in a 15 second chassis at this point.
Get it down to the 1.75-1.80 range and the ET will be 13.00 or better.
Converter is going to make a BIG difference. Probably pick up a couple MPH with a good unit.
Might be more in the tune. Should be in the 340-360hp minimum range is my guess. More than enough for a solid mid 12's in a good chassis.

More gear, at least 4.10s, 10" 3500 torque converter and DOT sticky tires
Buddy had a Duster with 10:1 383, MP .484"/284° hyd cam, stock 906 heads, Holley Street Dom intake with 750 Holley, 1-7/8" Hooker Fender-well headers, 4.56 gears, 10" Turbo Action S-800 converter, M&H DOT tires.
Car ran 12.20's with 1.58 60' with 2-1/2" exhaust.
Need to get the short stroke 383 moving out of the gate!

A good converter will help a ton. Any good converter company can build you one that will be what you need. Little more gear will definitely help too. Then you'll need tires to hook it.

These threads are always interesting.. Some look to make more power. Some want to do it with gear, tire and converter..
Personally, I prefer making more power. You'll throw over $2,000 at tires, gear and converter, and it will still be a power weakling. All that tire, gear and converter gets you is a better 60ft, For me I'd rather have, and find more fun, a 12.8 car that runs 110 mph, verses a 12.8 car that run 104 mph.
Also, I highly doubt that you'll be able to 60 ft your way to a 12 sec et with a street car that has a 100 mph trap speed.
With a good head, 10:1 cr, and a 230° cam, you should be able to run 108 mph in a 383 Dart.
What is the race weight, and what was your race day DA?

😂. I know this will sound awful but Dart is 3400 with my fat butt. DA.... 🤔. It was sunny!!
So let’s say I go with a nice head upgrade and like comp xl274 cam, or custom grind from Dwayne , am I restricted too Stealth heads or can I go with an eddy or sidewinder head..? The angled plugs give me pause.. This thing has a lot less engine bay then my previous B bodies.

You should check your timing with a piston stop as well as your carb opening fully. With what you have at that weight you should be going at least 106 MPH, are you running at a track much higher than sea level. This. Something is amiss here, as that car should be running better than what you're posting as is. Would be very curious to know what the air conditions were that day as well. I'd spend a good weekend going over the car, and fine tuning what you have, before I started throwing money at it.

What are you shifting at?

Thanks guys!
I am shifting at 5300 rpms to try and hit power band at end of track. They are 3:55 gears. Weather wise it was hot, a little humid.. carb shouldn’t be an issue, since it is efi.

Mike Try 38* of timing all in at 2400, and shift at 6000. It is hard to make up time on the "big end"
