From what I understand, the succession of the letters is a modification to the original part that does not affect the interchange. IOW, AC is an earlier version of AD; AD is an "improved" part.

Second character of the suffix is usually a revison which normally does not affect form, fit, or function.
If I remember correctly this is required to help keep track of things even when the part is the same but supply chain has changed. A change of packager or tier 1 machine shop would require a suffix rev even though they're all supposed to be making the part to the same specs, and you may not be able to see or measure any difference.
Anyway If I knew I needed an A*, I'd bolt on an AA through AZ without a whole lot of concern.

First letter of the suffix is the design, second letter is the revision level within the context of that design. This is as “smart” as a Mopar part number can get, other than odd-left, even-right (with few exceptions and errors), but after Almost 9 years of it I accepted that other deal as more cultural rather than rule. (Or why would the errors be allowed to exist?).
