I get steel from Strange and I've used aluminum shafts from Dynatech that worked fine, although it's been a while and I've heard they may have delayed delivery issues. Mark Williams is top shelf too. I would likely use MW or Inland Empire for aluminum.
I've used steel shafts from a local shop that builds truck shafts and does a good job, but these were street driven, OE replacement type units. Big difference between that and a shaft in a race car that may see 800HP and spin 7000+ RPM.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I bought one from Mancinis years ago (was dropped shipped from some place in IA I think), it was horrible. Had a vibration that finally went away when it broke the tail housing on my trans. Replaced the housing and on recommendation from others here I took my DS to Dynotech. I needed it in a hurry and in 2 days I had it back. They told me the balance and run-out were way off (like a banana they said) and the u-joint's were not good either (poor quality 1350's) They charged me $120 to rebuild my DS, this included straightening, balancing and the new u-joints. Never had any issue since, would use again. https://www.dynotechengineering.com/

Another vote for Strange from Dr. Diff.
I'd had a lot of issues with breakage with the smaller u-joints and tearing up the front yoke at the starting line was the last straw. The local shop were complete morons about helping me so I went to Cass's website per the advice on here.
I had it within a few days of ordering. Not only has it lasted at that level, but we have been spraying another 150 hp on top of that!

Who is using a carbon fiber shaft? How much more expensive is it over a steel unit?

... The local shop were complete morons... There are two local shops here in Portland that I know of and I highly recommend NOT using either one if you want quality work. That said, I can't remember the last time I saw a driveshaft failure at the track. They seem to be up to the job as far as I can tell.

I bought my Strange S-60 from Dr. Diff and plan to get a matching driveshaft from him when I can get the final measurements. That said, I was running an OEM driveshaft w/ HD 7290 u-joints and a local shop's balance job going mid-10s at 3700#s and had no problems at all. You saying: "I'd had a lot of issues with breakage with the smaller u-joints < Do you mean smaller than 7290s? > and tearing up the front yoke at the starting line was the last straw" makes me wonder if there was something else wrong than simply because it was an OEM driveshaft.

Local big truck and driveline shop (Sheppard's Truck Service in Florence, SC) makes mine for me. Never had a problem w/ them. 3" diameter shaft in a 3900 lb 8 sec car.
I twisted 2 stock Mopar driveshafts running high 10s at 3700 lbs.
