There are a lot of rod options now days. If there is a steel rod with a 2.100 sbc size bearing, that would really help. Custom aluminum rods can be had that way, but being fatter than steel, might not gain much clearance. Rod/stroke ratio and compression height rear thier ugly head at 4.5 stroke. Look at big block chev combos for evidence of what can be done. With a stock deck of 9.8 and a tall deck of 10.2, what the best engine builders are selling, like Shaforof or ReherMorrison should tell a tale.

We freshened a 526 (4.375 x 4.375) out of a mud racer about a year ago....... it all seemed to fit okay.

Our dragster had a 572" low deck. One thing that needs to be paid close attention to is clearance between crank throw and piston/rod. Make sure there is proper clearance for the rods and the cranks counterweights. If aluminum make sure you have a relief on each side of the small end. It gets tight but it fits. Ours had a KB Raised cam block
