Hello i recently purchased a 1976 Dodge Charger 400-4v and I’ve had the hardest time trying to figure out parts engine and everything I been searching to understand car better

I recently just changed carburetor to a edelbrock 750 but the electric lean burning system doesn’t fit around the carburetor without hitting I’m looking to change it and take it off can you guys tell me what I will need to do the conversion

Hi.

So it had a lean burn carb. Does the distributor have a vacuum advance can? Does it have an ECU on the firewall?

In order to remove the lean burn, you need an electronic distributor, an ecu, a ballast resistor and a wiring harness. MP used to sell a kit but I think it's now discontinued. Summit Racing had their own version of the kit. Theirs might still be available.

You should easily be able to find those components separately if you need to.

aliso, a lean burn distributor did not have a vacuum can on the distributor, nor advance weights inside the housing. the "box" on the side of the aircleaner housing did all of the ignition functions. just think of the distributor as a spark router to the plugs as it's only function. as said above, you need a different distributor, ecu box, and the simple wiring harness that goes with it. or even a simple points distributor will work, and is even easier to hook up.

That PN# Dennis listed is for a small block, the OP has a 400 B engine.
the correct PN# from Jegs is: part Number: 555-40504K
which includes ballast resistor, electronic distributor, ecu, and harness...for $223.86 & free shipping.

A lot of people don't care for the "orange box". Some years were problematic.

I think this is a great option at good price, good seller, semi-stock look. $143.00

I have to agree with this as well.

There is also a one wire HEI type distributor out there, if that trips the trigger...

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.

I could not remember what a 76 charger looked like, kind of big old ride.

Have a great day

If I recall right, 76 Charger is basically a Cordoba. I've converted several Lean Burn cars to electronic ignition and it is just a matter of connecting 2 or 3 wires, mounting the ecu and installing the dist. Pretty simple to do.

If you go this route make sure you get the 383/400 kit, not the 440 kit as the RB distributor will not fit a B block. the shaft is too tall.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Both the Charger and the Charger s/e are both B bodies in 76, but had different sheet metal from one to the other.

True the standard Charger looks like the Dodge Coronet/Plymouth Fury of the era where the SE shares Cordoba sheetmetal.

Thank you for that information, I thought they used the same ignition.

I'd own one, especially with a 400-4V
