I am restoring an AAR for a customer, my p/s pump pulley is not lining up, trying to figure out what is going on, I know the crank and water pump pulley is correct. the casting number on the p/s pump is 2537955 with a 3 spoke pulley. Any input would be appreciated.

Mine has a federal pump with a solid pulley, if that helps. Sounds like you have the wrong pump and/or pulley. You may have a BB pulley. The SB with the Saginaw pump has a different offset.

This one doesn't have a solid pulley, I have no clue where the customer got this pump from, definitely wrong. Just trying to figure out what I need. Thanks.

Photos would help.

I do not recall seeing any original AARs or T/As with a solid pump pulley.

The pulley is 7 inches in diameter. casting number on pump is 2537955. Customer supplied his own parts. He started out with the wrong crank pulley, I have the right crank and w/p pulley on now. definitely something up with the pump, pulley, or
both.

No Saginaw pump on a 1970 340. Aren't they federal pumps on them?

would you happen to have the casting number that's on the bottom of the pump? and possibly a photo looking straight down from the top. I would like to see the distance of the pulley to the pump body. Thanks.

Thanks, I have the same casting number, I must have the wrong pulley on the pump or crank, My water pump lines up fine so I think I can eliminate the crank pulley, looks like your p/s pulley sits closer in.

I dug out the two I had. One is from a car without AC & the other had AC.

The pulleys are different on mine.

The non AC version has curved spokes.

The AC version has flatter spokes.

Rough guess without measuring is close to a 1/2 offset difference between the two.

If needed I can put them in the parts washer for a cleanup & get photos.

The pulley on mine is sitting about a half inch to far forward, looks like I have an a/c pulley on the pump from your info. Thanks for checking.

Here's a pic of my AAR pulley after bead blasting. I was unable to make out the numbers where I have the X's.

Hmm, maybe reverse the pulley? Disregard.

it appears the Federal small block pump used the same pulley 1970-'73 #2951 901

per the Parts Catalog(s): 19-54-86 PULLEY, Pump B/J

1970 (May 1970)
2951 901 - 318 & 340 w/3/8" threaded hole pump shaft (A & B-bodies also)
2951 989 - 318 & 340 w/key slotted pump shaft (B-bodies also)

1970-'71 (January 1972)
2951 901 - 318 & 340, 340 3-2bbl w/3/8" threaded hole pump shaft (A & B-bodies also)
2951 989 - 318 & 340 w/key slotted pump shaft (B-bodies also)

1973 (September 1972)
2951 901 - 318 & 340 w/3/8" threaded hole pump shaft (A & B-bodies also)
2951 989 - 318 & 340 w/key slotted pump shaft (listed as E-body ONLY)

neither of these pulleys are shown in the '69 Parts Catalog
neither are shown as used on a C-body
the 2951 989 is also listed in the '72-'73 Truck Catalog for B/W/D & 225/318/360

If you run out of ideas you can put the pulley in a press and rebend it to the depth you need to line up. I have done this to quite a few over the years. Then install it on the pump, clamp the pump in a vise and spin it to check pulley run out. If you need to adjust it you can just bend it by hand. The 3 spoke pulleys are very easy to bend.

The only Carbs I care about are under the hood!

I cleaned mine up for photos. These pulleys are the same diameter, both pumps are 955s but notice the pulley to pump offsets.

The one at left is from a 340 with 3.91 gears, so it has the cooler.
