John Hagen had a low deck Hemi in his pro stock arrow. (The car killed him, unfortunately) It was a 383 block with the bosses for the intake port head studs welded onto the block.

Before NHRA went to the 500" format in pro stock, Gen 2 hemi heads on a 383 block at 387-390 ci went faster than anything else at the time. Stage V used to offer a head that would bolt right on a wedge pattern block, not sure if any of that stuff is still around.

Hemi Joel beat me to it, John was actually killed in his new Charger/Omni with a 500" motor under the hood. The Arrow was restored and on display at Indy last year.

Tom Haner used to have one in a 4 speed barracuda years ago in the chicago area. I think his was a 400 block welded high revving 7400+ shifts.

Yes, Tom Haner bought all of Hagen's small hemis after the rule change, and ran them in the ex-Lambeck 68 Barracuda. Tom stopped in at the engine shop I was working at back in the early 90's, he shared some info on what made the 383 based hemis tick, and did also mention that he flat footed them on the line at 9400 (no rev limiter) and shifted at 9000.

FWIW, the Ball-stud Hemi was built on a B-height block.

Those are some cool old pics KDY!

Even at the B deck they were still too tall, but better. Shorter pistons are lighter, shorter pushrods are stiffer, etc., another inch shorter deck would have been a nice package.

I know a guy that worked on a 370" BBC pro stock deal that had the entire deck removed, the block shortened, then the deck surface furnace brazed back on. Crazy stuff, but if you couldn't find what you wanted, you made it yourself.

I know of one brazed block floating around that has had .300 taken off the deck. Mike Radnis used to run that set up in one of his old cars. Not sure if he is a member.
