Just what it says,I have a solid flat tappet now, what would the cost be to go to a roller and is it worth it on a street/strip car,put about 1500 to 2000 miles a year.
THANKS EDDIE B

Cam, cam button, oil pump drive, rollers, pushrods ... Roughly $ 1600.

You can cheap out on the lifter or you can go nuts. I quoted good Cranes.

If you don't get SUCKED IN with the nay sayers saying solid lifters won't hold up and are more trouble than they are worth there are a lot of VERY good solid lift cams available.
Breaking in another solid lift cam tomorrow morning in a new build and Brad Penn oil is in the oil pan and for now the inner springs are sitting on my work bench.

I stayed with a solid flat tappet for a few reasons and price was one of them. I put a good bit of miles on my 63 street/strip car as I would guess I put well over 3000 miles on it this year. Its nice not having to run the spring pressures of a good solid roller but many guys are doing it. To me you just have to weigh it all out. Is it worth the money to you to pick up a little et ?? But how much et will it get you ? Are you at a point that you really want the et gain ? Whats your combo and how does it run now ? Ron

it's definitely worth it but it is costly.
cam around $500
springs/keepers etc
lifters
push rods
rockers could get real expensive depending how much spring pressure you go with
oil pump drive
good parts somewhere around $3K

whatever the cost, it's worth it. went from a flat tappet cam that was 284@050 650 lift to a roller that was 272@050 660 lift & gained half a second & an engine that had manners. sure parts maintenance is more but the midrange power really gets the adrenilan going.

Since you are putting ~ 2k/year with street miles, I'd guess you want a reliable low maintenance setup. A roller with mild ramps and moderate spring requirements probably won't give you much more performance vs what you have now. Push it up to an aggressive roller and maintenance/reliability may become an issue.

You need a dominator on that combo........... FWIW, I went from an Isky .590-.605 solid and fully ported 906`s to a .680-.660 solid roller and ported rpm heads and went from 10.48 to 9.79 and I`m not done finessing it yet..........

Just curious has anyone tried/experimented w/the Hughes camshafts?? Have been eyeing one, but just can't pull the plug. Don't want to/can't afford to upgrade to a roller right now. Just curious, Ken

3K is extreme. That would be with the absolute best of everything which would be overkill in anything other than an all-out race motor. I'm in around $1600. with a Lunati Voodoo roller, Crane lifters, Smith's pushrods, MP bronze gear, K Motion springs, Comp retainers and locks.

OP has possibly already made that leap with a solid flat tappet. Besides, a roller cam doesn't necessarily need roller rockers.

FWIW mine are Harland Sharp

I can understand you trying to defend your exorbitant estimate but really, you don't need to spend 3K to go with a roller cam.

And you don't want to skimp ........ANYWHERE.
If you do not have quality rockers , add them to the bill.
FWIW , I had exactly three choices with my W-9 and I think two are made by the same company.
T&D here.
Harlands are a great choice too , but they start around six bills.

exactly especially if you are wanting to run a high pressure cam. cheap stuff wont cut it. my street roller i can get away with indy rockers increase pressure and they will break

I reckon a dominator would pick the motor up a bit, that's a small carb for your setup.
