I have a 70 440 with 727 and 3.23 gears. have heard of a Aftermarket torque convertor that acts almost like a 4th gear at highway speeds but is not an overdrive or lockup unit. has anyone heard of this or used one?
?? the converter ?? I think you mean the trans.

That is what I have in there now, so you are saying I should keep what I have and it will help to reduce rpm's at highway speeds?
when you say stock converter what 'stall' are you considering stock? if you are referring to your gear ratio a 3.23 is not really a cruising ratio but it is far from a killer either. what car do you have, and is it stock as far as you know? are you trying to reduce your engine speed when on the highway?

Then you need to add an overdrive of some sort, or change the rear end gearing. No big secrets here.

The B&M Superdrive Converter from the early eighties had an internal overdrive, it didn't stay around too long so I imagine it wasn't a great success.

http://papers.sae.org/820742/"A torque converter has been developed for aftermarket use in older, heavier, large engined cars and light trucks to improve fuel economy, particularly at highway speeds. This torque converter includes an output coupled overdrive and torque split within the converter itself. This torque converter has shown gains in highway fuel economy of 9 to 21 percent. The converter changes that give the improved fuel economy result in a lower acceleration level for the vehicle"
