The original Chrysler shop manual is vague about the wiring to the carb solenoid on a 71 383 4-speed car (Holley R-6191A; non-air grabber). I think the original engine harness is still in the car and unaltered. There is a white round female end plug on the harness --did that possibly goes to the carb solenoid? The original solenoid has two 18 gauge wires coming off and according to the manual, one is to the distributor ground switch and the other to solenoid lead. Can anyone clarify what is correct and how to get it back to original? Thanks in advance.

Somebody has added that plug . I looked at my old harness, that thing ain't on it. Even the digram doesn't show anything that looks like that.

What I suspected--too strange to be original. Someone may have tried an aftermarket solenoid that used that plug.

Does anyone know if the replacement M&H engine wiring harnesses have the correct plug-ins for the solenoid?

I checked M&H and they list a carb solenoid harness for the 71 383 4-speed (B&E Body), Part No. L38496

Actually that plug looks like a DN connector that used to come on some car stereos.I don't know who Frank Baldson gets his harness from, but you could ck with him also. Is that the original carb? I thought only Air Grabber cars got a Holly.

A Holley 4160 is factory correct for the '71 383 motors. Mine has a 4668 carb on it now. According to the shop manual the 4668 carb is correct for a '71 383 Automatic. A Holley 6191 was specified for the 383 4-speed motors (B&E body). From what I have read, a lot of these Holleys were replaced by dealers with Carter AFBs due to leakage problems. Mine is leaking around the secondary bowl and transfer tube. Hopefully some new gaskets will solve the problem.

Mine is also missing the choke diaphragm link so if anyone has one, let me know. I am going to try to bend from 3/32 welding rod based on some pics I have--maybe I can get close enough to have an operable choke--you really need one in Montana.

That is not the proper connector and m&h is where I went also but of coarse you have to go through year one. If I remember correctly it also ties into the distributor vac advance. I could get you a photo if the car was not in storage. If you would like a photo I can get it but it would be a few days.

One thing to notice. If that carb has a plastic ramp that the acc pump arm travels on it can wear a grove on it and the pump will pump late or not enough, and you will have a nice bog. I remember that from my original carb.
