Who is blending E85? What octane gas are you using? Do you blend in 55 gal drums?

I buy from the pump at Meijer and if its in the summer
I never had to do anything... its always been E-85-86
EDIT
If you come up short in testing the fuel your gonna
need to blend with 110

Why would you want to blend it? It's 85% ethanol and why would you want to change that?

I think he is saying if it falls short of the E-85 rating

Yes Mr. P your correct. Sometimes it less at the pump and if you tune your car for 85% it may run lean.

I always tested my fuel before I bought it... I would
hang around the E-85 pump and wait for a person to
buy some.. I'd ask if I could take a sample and explained
why I was doing it... I NEVER had a person say no..
especially when I could tell them the alky content
that they were buying... if it showed good(85-86)
I would then load my barrels/drums... I dont buy
it if it show low(why pay for a product that isnt right)
which it never has been at Meijer when I bought it

Hear in east Tenn all we can get is E70. The station owners have showen me a Letter from their supplier that states E70 is all they will ever get. To compensate I blend 98% ethanol with it. I add one gallon of 98% ethanol to the E70. This blend brings the mix up to 85% ethanol. I buy the 98% ethanol in 55 gallon drums. I can get 100% ethanol locally but at $10 a quart it gets expensive, besides the stuff I buy by the quart is better stuited for drinking. As far as mixing 110 race fuel with the ethanol you will be making yor engine run even richer if you are tuned for E85. If you end up with an E70 blend, I would jet the engine for E70, so you will need to jet down to keep from being to rich. I tune using an o2 sensor set on a Lambda scale. I tune my engine to be 15 to 20% rich when I reach the strip, so on a lambda scale you want to be between 80 and 85. Hope this helps.

If you can buy E-100 that is drinking alky and is taxed
based on drinking alky... thats why it comes as a max
of E-98 coming out of the ethanol plants(they dont
want to pay the drinking alky taxes)

Actually the motor would be rich, not lean if the percentage was less than 85% and you were tuned for 85%.

I think he would be more concerned with detonation
with the lower octane(less ethanol)

I was told if you did that to raise octane, you need to use UNLEADED race fuel because the lead and ethanol do not mix right.

I dont know for fact.. we use to use unleaded because
thats all we had in the lab... or E-98 and most
of the time we used E-98 for blending(if we had
it at the time)... we normally had 1 drum of it..
but if someone used it and didnt tell me we were out
I didnt order it(unless I happened to check the drum room)

Any do or don'ts on type of storage drums?
What type of checking gauge?
Will it work with 13/1 ratio?

thats what I was told also do not mix leaded race gas with E85 ask Mark Sullens

Almost all the steel drums have a epoxy liner in them
now days so those work fine... if you use plastic drums
they need to have a permeation barrier(it looks like
a separate layer/liner that is molded in it)... I
use the water tester for checking the content.. I
got it from Quick Fuel or Summit... yes it will work
with 13.1... my static compression is 14.1:1 but that
doesnt mean much... my cam really lowers the compression

Thanks for the reply, I plan on using two 3310 Hollys. For just a ballpark guess how much percentage should I open up jets and idle circuits, 20-30 percent?

It takes more to it that just the jets and idle...
but it needs 30% more fuel... make sure your supply
can deliver it also

Talk to Mark Sullens He know his stuff. Im going to run a 15:1 static B1 and it should not be an issue. He has a few 16:1 motor running on it.
