A friend og mine has an original 66 Hemi-Charger. The current Hemi-engine is a 1965 model, with heads from 1968. The engine has the original mechanical flat tappet cam.
According to the service manual the exhaust valve clearance is supposed to be .032, intake .028
These gaps seem fairly big, and they seem to create a noisy valve train. Are these gaps normal and is the valve train normally noisy? Can anything be done to the noise?

Tighten the lash and see. I'd run about .024 and .028".

Hemi's sound like a coffey can of nuts and bolts, being shaken around, all the time.
Nature of the beast.

Maybe because they are 70-71 hydraulic lifter.

an original 47 year old engine, eh? that's a lot of years. Could even be noisy rods or wrist pins, that's a long time to be a performance engine.

When was the last time your friend checked the lash?

As mentioned tighten up the lash. Its common for solid lifter loose lash cams to make excessive noise. They sound like crap for sure.

my 528 is noisy more so when hot it's a flat tappet. Do you guy's think it's time to set the lash already? it only has around 500 mi on it since it came off the dyno. Barton used the tool steel lifters with a bullet solid cam. I did not get my cam card but the dyno sheet says 280 cam. I think the gross lift is around .667"intake and similar on the exhaust. the dyno sheet says lash set to .20 but that is crossed off and .10 is wrote on for both intake and exhaust lash. this sounds very tight can I hurt anything running the lash this tight? The engine has an iron block aluminum heads and roller rockers.

Set the valve lash as specified, you get used to the valve train noise, it's normal. It reminds me of a well oiled sewing machine. If you don't like it turn up the radio.
With a cast iron block and aluminum heads the .010/.010 is probably pretty close setting them cold.Dave

OEM and most MP solid cams were .028/.032
Aftermarket cams generally have less lash, therefore quieter, ramp design has a lot to do with lash specs. The other extreme are OEM slant six solid cams, .010/.012, almost no valvetrain noise.
I like the sound of a solid cam. I'd try .002 tighter but not more, why take a chance of hurting something.

yup your right it does sound like a sewing machine. So .10 is definitely a cold lash setting? or cold it ever possibly be a warm lash setting.

Mine has hydraulic lifters and it still sounds like a sewing machine. That's how you can tell hemis at car shows. I've never heard one as quiet as a wedge motor. Even my 2010 challenger has some of that sound.

When you say original engines is a 1965, what is the assembly date of the motor? If it is a race 1965 engine converted to a street hemi motor with the 1968 heads and street ehmmi intake and carbs the race cam is a lot bigger than the street hemi cams If it is a early 1966 street hemi motor with the block cast after July of 1965 try tightening the lash up .004 to .006 with the motor HOT

Couldn't agree more. I have alum heads and iron block. I started at .016...too noisy. Went to .013....better, but still noisy. .010 did the trick.

Dead quiet when cold, quieter mechanical noise when hot.

Noise to some, music to me. Shaft collars also reduce the noise a bit. My 66 has a "quality" sound to it, shaft collars and .024 and .028.
