The clearance between the bolt head and block... even
with bolts the head thickness is pretty thin for clearance...
the welds on that conv look like they didnt penetrate
at all(like the weld was sitting on the top of the
metal... it could be the heat affected zone I'm
looking at

Can you post better pictures of where the weld broke? I'm also not seeing any evidence of penetration.

These were the only pictures we took before sending converter back. They changed the back plate and added the extra lugs no charge.

Wait till the bad weld police get ahold of this. After 5 years of bashing suspension parts, they were LONG overdue for a new target.

Their is not enough weld on the bosses, I would find a reputable weld shop in your area and have them reweld it with more heat and a larger fillet and take your flexplate to use as a fixture for proper location

AMEN.
This is why I hate MIG welders in the hands of the uninformed. It's so easy to make a really pretty weld that doesn't do anything.

Years ago my cousin needed some college money so he took a job at a farm equipment manufacturer named Haybuster. He was raving about how easy it was to weld with a MIG. Beautiful weld every time. The kicker - training was like 5 minutes!

Just think, from zero to pro welder in 5 minutes.
Give me a stick anytime.

Yeah, yer right, not MIG welds. I guess I was waiting to go off on something today. But, no penetration regardless of what welds.

Keith,
I was going to send you the pictures, glad you logged in.

We will have to get the trans over to you, so you can see how your modification to the trans are working after 90 + passes hitting it with 500 NOS.

And also so you can check out the 1.95 first set that we had made up.

Engine is at LEGEND getting freshened up, had 1 bad valve and the new liners we had put in the bores 2 years ago were knocked around little, having over size pistons made up at Diamond

Ordered new rear rims going to a bigger tire so we may have to keep a eye on the high gear clutches.

JIM

imho the proper solution would have been to actually weld the four lugs as opposed to merely sticking them on. i hope the person that welded that converter got the chance to see it so they know it wasn't done anywhere near correct.

did transmission specialties do the first converter that failed?
