Yes The distance from the deck to the "closed" or shallow part of the open chamber is almost always near .100 thou give or take--good yardstick if there ever was one.

Use a mic and measure the lower head bolt outside flange area at one of the corners. The range in stock thickness can be from .995 to as much as 1.015 for stock heads that haven't been milled. Measure both heads and post the readings. You need to measure both heads and if one head does need milled mill the other so you have both heads the same thickness when done.

both heads measure at .995-,993 pretty evenly across them. how far can they be safely milled then?
A whole lot more
My 915's have a .110" angle mill plus a .025" straight cut on them I'd say there's about .100" material left between the spark plug threads and the deck Been it for years

this is correct. i've found the '906 heads to be 1.00 and the '452's maybe 1.1.

Is there a similar measuring spot for small block cylinder heads?
Use same spot, lower corner head bolt boss. I don't recall right off what the norm is for stock cast iron head thickness ?

What are you trying to accomplish ? With what piston and what camshaft ? As John asked what is the price of the heads ? May be better options for you depending on price. They appear to be original thickness.

It's been made to fit together Only thing I worry about is performance. I make things work to get what I want if need be Makes life interesting and I can't argue with the slips
