As far as sending units go, forget it. Just invest in a wooden stick, make marks on the stick for full, another mark for half way, and then another mark for I'd better get to a gas station. Keep wooden stick handy in trunk. 
Sorry, I got carried away. Type sending units into search. You will learn very quickly that aftermarket sending units are........well, to say the least, very inaccurate. Its a crap shoot on which one to try and which one to stay away from.

Just keep in mind that if you get a new sending unit and it works perfectly.........straight out of the box, with no tweeking. Then rush to your nearest lottery retailer and buy some powerball tickets. Because you're one lucky sun of a gun.
My sending unit, which was Made in Mexico Mopar unit; when I did the Ohms sweep with the arm (outside the tank), it read correctly. But inside the tank was a different story. My readings were approx. a quarter of a tank off. When the tank was full, the gauge read barely 3/4 full.
So I bent the pick up tube in the down direction (right behind the circular metal plate that goes flush against the tank), tweeked it a couple more times, and NOW it reads correctly. As stated earlier, WHY IS IT SO HARD TO BUY A DECENT FULL SENDING UNIT???

I mention this everytime I see one of these threads but I picked up a Spectre unit from Autozone and it works perfectly. I didnt have to bend anything, and my readings are pretty spot on. When I fill up it reads just under the full line, almost touching it. So I have a very small built in "reserve"

Edit: I should mention that I did run a nice fat dedicated ground wire from the frame to the sending unit at the suggestion of some here, it's a much more solid ground than the factory one. And I also pulled the connector apart that's behind the driverside kickpanel. The one that connects your sending unit to your gauge. I cleaned it of rust/corrosion, put dielectric grease and closeout back up.
spectra/premium is my favorite,and the rest is junk....mike

Sorry to hijack the thread, but can you explain more about the connector behind the driver kickpanel? My gauge does not work and I thought I had eliminated all possibilities except a bad circuit board. But I did not do anything behind the kickpanel. What does the wiring look like behind the kickpanel?

YMM?
There are many harnesses in muscle car era vehicles. The underdash harness, the engine harness the front lighting harness and the rear harness. Each connect to others. The obvious ones are the bulkhead connectors at the driver's side firewall. The rear harness connects at the driver's side kick panel.
Here's a Valiant picture I found online showing how the harness is routed.

I don't know if it's the same in your car, mine is a 71 b body. I just traced my wire from the sending unit up to the dash, and found that there was a connector behind my drivers side kick panel that goes up to the dash. My guess is that it's there to simply allow u to replace the wire if necessary.
