I'm trying to install a B&M Pro Ratchet shifter that I just bought in my '70 Dart and the supplied 5 ft cable is just too short. What I really need is a 6 foot, but the next size up offered by B&M is an 8 ft which would be way too long. Does anyone know of a source for custom length cables, or if it possible to shorten an 8 ft cable properly?

The 5-footer for the Cheetah in my '64 looked too short, but it's actually fine. Comes out the front of the shifter, through a hole in the floor, and loops around. TurboAction sells longer cables but I don't know if they work with the B&M. Hole in the floor should be close to the shifter.

Spent several days trying to route it. Because of how the headers fit, the only viable route is forward and looped back around the mini-starter to get a straight shot at the shifter lever on the trans. I just need another foot to make it work. And the cable has to be threaded on one end and have an eyelet on the other.

Boating supply store
Hint 2
morse cable

I never understood why all the cables ran FORWARD, into the narrow crowded area instead of back...

Not all cables run out the front. It depends on what shifter you buy.

B&M makes a 6 foot shifter cable. Check their website. They are the race version with eyelet and threaded end.

They make 2 6ft. cables, part #80740 and part #80506. I spoke with B&M and they tell me the 80740 will only work with Unimatic shifters, but they couldn't really explain the difference to me. They just said it wouldn't fit. The 80506 look pretty much identical to the 5 ft. Super Duty cable I have now, except it is threaded on both ends, instead of having an eyelet on one end. I'm thinking I could make an eyelet to thread on. Anyone know any more about the differences in the cables??

Will the shifter let you run the cable out the back?

No, no way to run it out the back without major modifications.
