I am cleaning up some painted steel rims to sell to a friend. When I took the tires off the rims there was more than the expected rust along the bead area and the rim edge and around the valve stem hole. The tires held air so I will assume the rims are acceptable for use. I took a wire wheel to those areas and broke the rust loose and then I treated it with a rust stopper which turns the rust to a black oxide. My question is; Is there a product I can spread over the pitted areas , sand down, prime and still have it hold up without cracking and popping loose and still look presentable? Thanks Mike

Sounds like you want to hide the rusted areas, why ? I would let the end user decide how they want to treat those areas.

Just trying to make the rims presentable is all!

I would use a product like All Metal filler. Fill the pits, sand it smooth, prime, then paint.

If they are that bad that you need to hide their condition from your friend maybe you should ask yourself if him being your friendship is more important than the money?

Just sand blast the wheel, put a good primer on it and paint. I just redid a wheel about a month ago. Mine had some surface rust with a little pitting, but came out really nice.

I agree with John on this one. I may try and clean them up if I was going to use them, but not for resale, especially to a friend. I've bought stuff with hidden damage at swap meets and was more than a little pizzed when I found it later on. Go ahead and sell it to your buddy, just expect that you may have to look for some new friends.
