I apologize if this has been posted a million times, but I couldn't find anything in the search. I have been reading that the Autozone starter PN17181 designed for the newer Dodge truck will work on my 440. Is there any modification needed to make it work? Any additional info I need to know? Thanks!

If you can stand the way they sound, get one for an early-mid 90s Dakota/Ram with a 318

My Dad bought a starter for a 1998 Ram 318/360 and installed it in his 1974 Charger with a 360. I wasn't there, but he said the installation was easy. It sounds a little odd, but works great with with his headers.
No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

If you have to take off the side terminals to make it fit, how is it wired?
Its sort of a terminal adapter--it mounts to existing terminals and basically just moves them. When you remove the adapter you expose terminals that you use.

Two terminals are still there.
Think of the piece that you take off as an "extension".

Follow the tips that people have mentioned before. I had to grind on the nose cone of my starter for the clearance. I love it. Also, I got mine from autozone for like $100 or so, but it comes with a lifetime warranty. Anywhere in the country, if it gives out on me, I just go to the nearest autozone and swap it out for free. I like that piece of mind.

I marched in to an Autozone and got one for a '92 Dakota 318. Took off the terminal extension and it bolted right up. Starts much faster.
