dude..sb's are ok. Agin you make anything fsat. how much money you want to toss at it? I'll tell you what say you have a nice a-body and $3500 to build a 10 second motor. you going to go w/ a 340 or a 440? what ever you can do to a SB you can do to a bb and run faster. PERIOD. My junk is 446ci and uses off the shelf parts that any knuckel buster can assemble in his/her garage. No special tools no special crank, rods bla bla bla. It'd run low 10's in an a-body with a single 4 more gear and stall. Fact is you can make 500 HP and over 500 ft lbs of torque w/ a stock stroke, hydro cam, non-adjustable rockers, single 4bbl, iron headed 440. Can you do that w/ a 340? NO.. you can't.

I'm with AWBDART on this one, I've build & raced several 440 A bodies, do they run good, yeah, are they cheap, Ah no, I've seen several so-so non stroked 340/360 A bodies spank mild 440 A bodies , I know of MANY mild 11 second SB A bodies out there on pump gas, 360 parts are way cheaper then 440 parts, most are damn near as cheap as a 350 chevy, The illness of the SB was (other then the W2s) were the crappy "yes i said crappy" earlier open chambered iron heads, The newer magnum style are so much better, When i had my junkyard 360 magnum in my dart, I had a total of 1800.00 in it, that was with a brand new set of 850.00 RHS heads & the 300.00 i paid for the engine, small re-ground cam & a knock off RPM intake. I drove that car to the track every weekend (100 mile round trip) & ran 12.5s all night on 87 octane, hardly any stall or gears (11" 2800 PTC & 3.73s), I easally could have put that car in the 12.2s with a 4.30 gear & a 3800 9.5" & still drove it there, I had a guy racing his rebuilt 446 dart accuse me of running nitrous because i ran exactly what he did in his 72 dart, he didn't understand it , I've had a few SB A bodies in the past, I love my BBs, but from now on i'll stick with a SB for my A body, Magnum of coarse. If you look at the one video in my sig., I raced a 69 Yenko 427 camaro, those cars were fast, he ran 12.4s too my 12.5s, he came & chit chatted with me & was highly impressed when i told him what i had, he thought for sure i had a BB

Eric, did you buy most of this stuff used like the heads & HS rockers, If not, i don't see how you could have only 3K with 1400.00 heads, not so cheap rockers & 400.00 pistons not counting the other bolt-ons & cam/lifters/timing set/pushrods/bearings/rings/carb & all the machine work unless this was 20+ yrs. ago or you own a machine shop ., just saying, I did my 451 for 3600.00, but i only had 450.00 in the heads.

I bought my re-freshed 440 here on moparts assembled and ready to fire for 3k... .030 440 11.19:1 ross pistons, H-beam rods, stock steel crank, Ported stage VI heads, new 588 comp solid roller, H/S 1.5's, fluidampr, 8 qt oil pan 1/2 pick-up and some extras...(not including the 6-pack) Deals are out there. Just had to drop the 6-pack on and paint it orange.
Thanks Gumbydammit.

Can't argue with that, sounds like a great deal, goes to show times are getting touch.

what happened to hearing about stupid fast 400 combos?

Not 400 but, When I put my 383 together, my buddy offered to put it in his 67 cuda before my body work was done. With a 850hp spec convertor , terrible 60'(1.6x) it still ran out the top at 130 mph, at 10.60. it was still slippin at 6000 thru the traps..
Not stuupid fast, but sure lays down ez #s in an a body....

lol what a typo...i obviously meant 440

that 400 you mentioned sounds like it ran hard! I was thinking of putting a 400 or 383 low deck in my a-body, but because i was on a super tight budget and already had the small block stuff (plus the clutch linkage to contend with headers and such) i figured id stay sb..sometimes i wish i had gone the B/RB route though...I dont care what anyone says, dollar for dollar you can go faster for less with the bigger motors imo
