Yes a good basic compression test will tell you ballpark if the long block is healthy (ring seal/piston wear/cam lobes) and if it's combo of parts (piston CR/cam choice/head CC) is acceptable. Then that leaves the rest of the eng (intake/carb/ex/timing and the car itself (TC/weight/gearing. Want to narrow the prob down. Good luck w it.
