At least I am doing something to make people chuckle these days! (Even if it is AT me. ) It certainly won't be the last time I display the fact that I slept through many of my English courses! I understand why they did it but the word "it" should not have been considered a singular noun. Keep in mind that the mistake needs to be "preserved" when reproductions are manufactured.
