If you have access to a gas welder brazing the slots works well also without putting too much heat to it. Also, keep in mind that most electronic distributors like the Mopar unit will retard about 1 degree for every 1000rpm over about 4K - and something slightly less than that starting around 3500, so when you are playing with advance curves / totals, always use the same rpm when setting the total timing. I usually like to use the 3 to 3500 rpm range ( very few circumstances where you want the curve to be past 3K ). That way I am sure all the mechanical is in, and I am staying out of the "electronic retard" range.
