I had the same problem with a 273 in a '67 Barracuda. The engine seized shortly thereafter.
In my case,the thrust bearing had gone away, when I came to a stop the crankshaft was actually sliding forward inside the engine. The CS counterweight had ground away about 1/4" of the center main web in the block before the engine seized.
