This would be my biggest concern getting your two cuts down the length of the frame both straight so you could match things back up when you are done. That means you have to make four cuts on each side of the frame rail straight (top and bottom of each section you plan on keeping) then you have to bring the two sections of frame back and square keep it all square. It will work but I can see a lot of trimming happening unless you have some seriously steady hands or quality equipment.

What Ron did seems easier and with the addition of plates and boxing the frame you should have a solid result (with good weld penetration obviously).
