I would not run two hot water boilers off the one digital thermostat, although like you I have experienced problems when 1983 vintage mercury switch on/off mechanical thermostats were replaced by “better” year 2007 digital thermostats when I was not present. I suspect the HVAC employee as “padding the bill” when the real fault was simply a bad bearing on the air handler fan motor.
