That's strange that the hydroboost didn't work. IIRC, it has priority over the PS for fluid from the pump so I would have expected just the opposite. If you look in a GM manual for troubleshooting the hydroboost, if it doesn't work it's basically a failure of the hydroboost or the pump or both. If the power steering initially worked and then didn't, I'd vote for a defective hydroboost.
