Covering your tires so the sun doesn't hit them is one of the best things you can do.
The sun does decay tires.

There really no actual natural rubber in tires anymore, they're made from petroleum by-products these days.

The suns UV rays destroy them, you know just like it does to plastic.
Treating them with something that protects against UV rays will help.

I use a pair of old steel exterior house doors leaned up against my trailer to keep the sun off the tires when it's parked, which is more than it's actually used.

Here in Arizona you have to park East/west to avoid you sidewalls from being exposed. I hade a new pair of tire crack on me in just two months. They also recommend a tire dressing applied once a month during the high heat months.
