Just reading the history, this is what I think:

1) axle #1 - old age gets everything
2) axle #2 - stuff happens

I'd put another axle in what you have and motor on, especially with the financial situation you say you are in. Sometimes I think there is a tendency (and I'm not immune to it either) to start replacing major components after a failure when the actual problem was a minor component failure.
