There's a wood burning stove in my garage in WV. I haven't been up there in the cold to fire it up yet though so how well it works is yet to be determined. I would be curious what your insurance company thinks of that? With your cheap natural gas I'd recommend a hanging unit heater, ideally mutispeed burner and blower. Red It was a $178/yr surcharge for the wood stove. It used to be in the house.
