What are you using to warm you up?

It's winter and my garage is cold up here in New England. I got this "butt warmer" over 20 years ago in Germany when I was stationed there and switched it over to propane with a regulator from an old barbeque grill. Doesn't heat the whole garage, but it keeps my hind end and hands warm when I'm messing around with my car. Also don't worry about ventilation since the garage ceiling is so high. What are you guys using?

Mr. Heater kerosene 50K BTU torpedoes. Garages are well insulated and these bring the temp up fast and it lasts for awhile.
If all day in the garage is planned, I have a ceiling hung 35K BTU propane thermostat controlled for cleaner heat.

my shop is unheated. my health problems cause me to sweat uncontrollably in the summer [and i love the heat], so the almost constant 40-45 degree temperature in the shop makes for working in a t-shirt and light jacket or shirt very comfortable.
at least i don't look like i stepped out of the shower after five minutes of work !

There's a wood burning stove in my garage in WV. I haven't been up there in the cold to fire it up yet though so how well it works is yet to be determined.

I would be curious what your insurance company thinks of that?

With your cheap natural gas I'd recommend a hanging unit heater, ideally mutispeed burner and blower.

I installed a radiant heat system in my garage when we built it 14 years ago. I use a high efficiency water heater as a heat source. Keeps garage relatively close to 50 degrees all winter. On coldest days, the heater has a hard time keeping up with the BUTs, but for minimal investment, works great.

A quick note on the wood stoves and ins. All I had to do is get a "Pro" to inspect and sign off that it was a safe functional setup to code and answered a few other minor things about haz. material storage, paints, ect... got a fireproof locker, ect and extinguishers in there proper place, blah blah blah......have the local fire chief walk through one time a year and sign off....... not a big thing.

I love the warm dry heat, things dont rust in my shop, ever.

I'd be really nervous about any kind of flame in a garage using gasoline, carb cleaner and other solvents...
In my garage and barn I only have an Ashley Graham poster. She'll keep you warm in the winter all right

Id use her big azz to smother a fire if one started. Yea she will keep you warm and not breathing when she rolls over on ya while you sleep.

I dont worry about too much in that way, obviously I wont spray laq. on that side of my shop and but things like brake clean, carb cleaner does not saturate the air enough to cause a issue.

My biggest oh crap moment was one am I walked in and had a 10 gallon jug of C16 leak fully onto the floor and still no boom.

Ya just got to be a little bit more aware, but really id be almost more concerned about a gas p light or the auto start system on some gas furnaces.

It was a $178/yr surcharge for the wood stove. It used to be in the house.

Got two of these 140K BTU natural gas units in my shop but can only run one at a time because the consumption exceeds the gas line capacity.

I use a older, legal in Oregon still, wood stove to burn up some of the trees I had cut down on our lot here in Bend, it had around 34 big pine trees on it when we bought it in 2004.
I've had eight trees remove so far I hate raking up pine cones and pine needles, these trees are really messy also
I forgot about the Wal Mart brand oil filled electric heater that I leave on in the engine room most of the winter, that will keep it around 55 to 65 F in that part of my shop if it isn't real cold outside, below 10F at night.
The wood stove will heat up the engine room to 80F + in a hurry if I stuff it full of wood, I have a set of double doors that open into the other part of the shop and I have had to open them all the way open to reduce the temps in the engine room, some day maybe I will get the handle on how much wood to burn to keep it right at 60 to 70F

I've got a Schwank radiant tube heater run on propane since no gas where I am. And a wood stove which I haven't used yet.

I have one of those garage approved natural gas furnaces hanging in the corner of my shop. Back when I worked every day, the programmable thermostat was set at 60 over night and bumped up to 64 during the day when I was working. I kept the over night so high because I had a lot of steel in racks in the shop, and if that got too cold, there wasn't a furnace made that could warm the place up.
Now that I'm retired, and the amount of steel sitting here has diminished a lot, the over night temp is 55, and i bump it up if I'm working in the shop. 64 is a good temp to work in, but a bit too cool if a guy was sitting around not doing anything. Gene

I have a 125,000 btu Gordon Ray infrared tube. It is 30' long and hangs about a foot below the ceiling. I love the radiant heat, it is so warm and comfy to work under its rays! I have a 500 gallon propane tank to feed it. I pre-buy 1000 gallons per year in mid summer when prices are low. I don't have to take delivery of all 1000 gallons at once, they come out on a regular schedule and keep it full. I usually don't use 1000 gallons, so I get credit for what I don't use. My 50x80 shed is very well insulated, and has no windows, 1 overhead door and one walk in door, so 125k btu is enough, even in -20F temps. It is a very reliable heater, its been here for 25 years with only regular maintenance, except for replacing 1 10' tube about 5 years ago.

I use gas that brings in outside air for combustion.
I would warn everyone to put any unvented heater on a timer, or get a carbon monoxide shutoff, some units have the. I had a friend that was changing a trans on his van fall asleep in a garage with a torpedo heater, it was ugly. He spent 2 weeks in the hospital, he was never right after that. It screwed his brain up, went from a good paying job to a plain repetitive job, just couldn't think fast anymore. It turned him into a droid for lack of a better term, seriously do not chance it. 25 years of hell for him.

So far this has been good enough.

Wow... that must be a thousand bucks (or two) just to heat your shop! I used to live in Presque Isle, Maine and in Feb. the heating oil bill was more than the mortgage (small older house).

In my 24x26 two story garage (11 foot first floor ceiling), I run a forced hot air mobile home furnace on a cottage base (vented on three sides). I keep the heat at 50 year round and turn it up to 60 when I am working in it. Runs off of Kerosene in a 275 gal tank outside. I fill the tank once every two years.
The cottage base is nice since it blows out on the floor and rises from there, heating the concrete floor in the process.

Heated floor in my shop so I don't need to worry about open flames or fumes or fans blowing dust around. My last shop was not heated and I froze my fingers this time of year. It was painful to work out there once the temp dropped down into the 40's.

I recall my previous homeowners insurance specifically excluding fire if I installed a wood burner in the garage.

Was thinking that was standard boiler plate?

Hydronic floor heating in mine. Love it. No regrets.

I have a Mitsubishi mini split. Heats in the winter, cools in summer. Very efficient and I don't really notice it on my electric bill.

You would be hitting nothing but trees on the way down. It's pretty thick forrest.

Ditto The outside unit I bought can run up to three separate indoor units. I run a four car garage and a 300sft great room on mine. Each room has their own inside unit. You can see it mounted on the wall over the tool box.

Just the garage, the house has gas heaters and the gas is free!!!!!
