It's a bee-yotch when things don't work out how we expect. It's also pretty much the way it bloody well goes...

IMO, just pick a task that seems like it would be doable/affordable/fun, and go for it. Maybe change the project if the scope is too big. For example, if money is tight and that high-dollar killer engine is bogging everything down, how about a junkyard engine to get it running?
Just an example, cuz I don't know what you're building. But I'm sure you get the point.

And, like lots of guys here have said, puttering along at something a little everyday gets it done.
