I think that is probably true, especially if this unit has seen many years of service and good maintenance habits otherwise
(decent quality oil changed frequently, decent filters, etc)...if that is how it went, then this has been happening over a long time
and the iron has been partially drained out of it at every oil change.


The back side/base circle looks to have a fair amount of corrosion pitting...this sure seems like an older unit?

I have never seen them before either, it is cool to learn something.
The highest volume of failed parts I've inspected all either failed during break in attempts
or right afterwards, and none had that appearance.


Maybe post pictures of the bottom of the lifters too?
