I like a filter to protect that expensive pump. Using one with a less restrictive micron rating AND paying attention to the old advice of using 1 or 2 dash size larger plumbing between the pump and the tank should reduce any restriction issues.

Along with that, keep your jugs, funnels, etc. clean so you don't pour trash into the tank along with the fuel. I used a paint strainer in the fuel funnel. Surprising what it would catch sometimes.
