I think it has more to do with RPMS Than HP. A single line can support up to 7000 RMPs anything over that need a double line(one on each side of the pumps stator). The swinging pick up is installed to accommodate the style of pan that you are using ie: large rear sump or dragster style). I've used a center sump with a static single line for 8 year now. I was running 8200 on the stock 3/8 pick up with a
little blending on the pump housing.. that was with
.003/.003 clearances on the mains and rods in a SB





A small block oil system is a little different than a big block. The pump is way closer to the oil level in the pan. The stock style pickup is way shorter and doesn't have to make a transition though the casting of the block. The extertal -12 pickup hose may be overkill but it let's me sleep a little easier.
