The rear sprag holds the rear drum from spinning in first gear only. after the trans shifts to second the drum spins in the opposite direction and the only friction loss would be from the drag of the fluid that is in between the rollers and races.

I could come up with a silly idea to make it a non issue, but you'd have an explosion waiting to happen, so I won't.
