True, you don't HAVE to use the 70-72 filler strip, but as you stand at the rear of the car, by the bumper, and look down, you will see a very noticeable gap without the strip. That why the factory went to the trouble of using the filler strip, and that's the same reason that I did...
I used about 7 self-tapping sheet metal screws to attach my filler to the bottom of the rear end taillight panel. The screw tips protrude slightly into the very lower inside of my trunk, but are not noticeable unless I point them out to someone.
