In these next few pics you can see the issue... this
first is with the tie rod angled back to the steering arm

This is just the engine in there so you see the relationship
of the rack and engine

No... that would put the inner tie rod to low... as
the wheel goes up it would pull more toe in and it goes
down it would go toe out... you want the inner rod
end at the same height as the outer and the rod to
be the same length as the lower control arms(which
that part is fine)

I would not exceed the 3" angle I mentioned, but you may be able to lower the r/p move it back and use spacers between the steering arm and tierod ends, that's what I have done on Lonnie's car and others when I had to work with previous work that was done. You may also add length to the steering arms to extend them forward.

I plan on making new steering arms... which should
make up about half of what I want... then I think
I'll angle it some and cut the tie rod and stager it
and weld it with a boot on it.
If I put the rack back between the damper and the
sump it would be behind the centerline of the spindle
and I would have to change racks... I'll stick with
this idea

What about something like the 98-99 Intrepid or Concorde steering rack? Its a center steer rack, a tab stick out about 3 inches from the rack and the tierods attach to the tab. The only problem is it is a power steering rack. Don't know if there is a manual version. On the Interpids/Concordes, its mounted on a shelf on the firewall. You'd have to flip your steering arms around to the back or ???

Just a thought.

I don't have any input but I'm glad this question came up because it was concerning me about my rack placement on an up coming K member build

Its actually pretty simple... have the inner tie rod
and the inner lower arm at the same pivot point...
then the outer tie rod ends level with the rack...
then you would like to have the rack and steering
arm at 90*.... simple.... if nothing gets in the way

Got another idea today... my buddy and I were talking
then came up with the idea of a drag link between
the 2 steering arms and then tie the rack arms to it...
gotta look at that idea... but I like it

I don't know, additional steering hardware never seems like a good idea to me.

I was going to suggest that but I couldnt remember the term Drag link as a way to describe it. A guy here in Ohio did that about 20 years ago and it was featured in a article in one of the mopar mags with pics. I have it around somewhere as I was going to do it too.

He pulled the tie rods out of the rack drilled it and tapped it i think. Bolted up plates and joined them across together the length of the rack and a drag link setup. That link moved the inner tierod locations up and back for his abody combo.

Dennis Laube was his name, if you want I can dig up the mag again and send you pics, " Not that you would want the Same exact fabbed piece.

Well I was looking at all the numbers and putting
things in place, it doesnt look to bad at all with
just using the rack... I'll have to add a wheel spacer
and extend the steering arm like I wanted, then move
the engine back as far as I can then still cut the
tie rod and overlap them it will look good(put a boot
over the tie rod) and then it wont have much angle
to the tie rods
