Well i got a compleat Dana 60 out of a 1970 dodge 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive truck that was a factory big block 4 speed. ok this dana has 4.10 gears in it and a suregrip in it. i am trying to build this one a budget. i know i know race car and budget dont go to geather.lol ok my question is

(1) what spline count is the factory sure grip. i mean are they 35 spline?
(2) how strong are the factory gears in these and sure grip?
the reasion i am asking these questions is if it will save me from having to buy gears and spool right now that would save me some money. but i will buy after market gears and spool if i have to.i am going to send this to doctor diff after tax day if i can ever get a hold of him. oh yea this is going in my 73 big block dart that i broke the 8-3/4.so far my car is running what is in my sig and i hope to go no faster than 10.00 but you never know.this is a street/strip car. so what do you think? or should i just bite the bullet and get the after market gears and spool? thanks Mopar65

More than likely a 32 spline sure grip???

Shouldnt be too hard to build. Just need some housing flanges, and a set of axles. Depending on the HP you have, Yukon makes a KILLER axle for a budjet built. They make a long spline, cut to fit axle I think.

23 spline is likely.

Buy new side gears for the sure grip.

New axles and housing ends and you're ready to go.

I bought a junkyard Dana 60 out of a 1970 GMC or Chevy 3/4 ton truck(don't remember exactly which one), it had 30 spline axles in it identical to the stock Mopar 30 spline 8 3/4 axles that we ended up using in it I do have two Dana clutch type posi units for 4:56 zand higher ratio, also have one or two sets of new Dana Corp. side gears for the 35 spline axles to convert a early posi to the 35 spline axles. I'll have to look at both posi to see if they have the early or late spline side gears in them, I think there both 35 splines but I will check to see I bought a new 35 spline spool from Dr. Diff for my car when I swapped the Dana 60 into it do to it having 4.10 gears in it

thanks for the info guys. yes i am trying to do this ona budget.lol but i will save up to buy the good parts if i have to.cab let me know if you find the side gears and how much you want for them. i am wanting to start off with the 35 spline axles now. so if the suregrip gives out on me i can just put a 35 spline spool in it and be done with it.I am going to try and get everything from doctor diff and have him cut down the axle etc also. that is if i can get ahold of him.lol thanks Mopar65

It will have 30 spline axles. The only Dana 60's that used 23 or 35 spline side gear are Mopar car Dana 60's. Trucks/vans are either 16 spline(Ford) or 30 spline (Ford,GM and Dodge). Early Dana 70's are 23 spline and late are 35 spline. These Dana 70 power lok internal parts fit a 60 power lock and that is what Dana/mopar did, put 70 side gears in the 60 for Dana 60 equipped cars.

I started on a small budget as well Look where it got me

Watch out for the heavy duty Dana 60 with real thick webbing around the housing, not good for the build.

I have a 1969 Dana 60 removed from a Dodge truck as well as one from a 75 Dodge truck. The 69 housing has extra webbing on the case that the 75 does not. This extra webbing is also found on my "Original Dana 60 from a 71 B body". Why is this webbing a disadvantage? I ask because I too am getting ready to narrow one of the truck diffs for my 69 Dart. I would have imagined the extra webbing would be better?

Dr Diff. sells the side gears, it is probally better to buy all new internal gears for your posi instead of mixing new ones with old ones I'll look at my posi's later this afternoon and see what I need, if I don't need both sets of the side gears I will sell one set of them to you,I'll PM you with the results

Nothing wrong with the HD housings.
8 lbs. wont break the et bank.
Much more rigid and prefered for 4 gear usage.

So it's a weight thing, got ya. Does the added strength justify the weigth differences? Anyone have problems with the non-gusseted housing?

No the weight is not the issue here it's the tubes and just the Dana is strong enough with out the added gussets, I think the tubes where 3.50 inches OD. all you need for the new ends is 3.25 or 3.0 also wall thickness on the HD model is quite thicker than the reg dana 60. It's under the work bench I will dig it out and measure it to see.

Is the one pictured the HD? What will the axle tube diameter be for each? Can anyone post a picture of both cause now I am starting to wonder what I have.

I'd be interested to know if you have a Trac-Lok or a Powr-lok. IIRC, the side gears are different between the two.

The one in the photo is a Normal Dana upside down. I will post a pick of this same one look. Yes a truck Dana 3/4 ton not 1 ton marked is marked with a HD on the inside of the housing

I have junk yarded a few Dana's and between the Ford and Mopar dana they where mostly the same. 3 1/4" OD and some where 3" or 3 1/8" around there.

I did run across a HD Dana with 3 1/2 OD It's was a beast with all the extra webbing.
Take a photo of both of your Dana's so we can see ..

Never saw a 60 HD with over 3.125 tubes.
Thickest wall thickness of tubes is about 1/2 inch.
here's a pic of the HD vs std Dana.
These are spares for my cuda, std 60 is in forefront.
