I have a 1970 Plymouth, someone painted over the VIN label. I'm 99% certain its the original door, the underside has the right color paint on it, glass dated all the same. What will clean the paint off without destroying the sticker? anybody have a junk parts door they can try different solvents on?

Don't use a solvent. There's a high probability it will destroy the sticker. Use 000 steel wool. This will work. I know this from personal experience.

I used some type of solvent on mine - most likely laquer thinner or paint thinner, but I can't remember. It left the sticker intact, but it removed the VIN and date off the sticker, so it's basically a blank sticker now. The rest of the writing on the sticker is there, and the sticker looks good (not melted or streaked from the solvent), but the "important" things - the VIN and date, are gone. I've been thinking about recreating the VIN and date on the sticker, but that's pretty low on a long list right now.

If they were incompetent enough to paint over it, then they probably did'nt hit anything with sandpaper. So, the paint should be barely sticking. You might be able to cut the paint on the edge of the sticker with a razor blade and flake it off......carefully!

Good luck!

If thats the case, you might be surprised by applying some masking tape and pulling it off on a 90 degree angle fairly quickly, or you could try scratching at it with you finger nail and compressed air. As noted above, try cutting around the outline.
