Yes and No... Bracket race unless you are laddered up against another car in your class, then it's heads up.Normally the index is for qualifying, and isn't a problem except at INDY where 160 cars show up, and only 128 race. You can either qualify into the 128 car field, or you can win class and bump the low #128 car. Want a gaurenteed spot in the Eliminations? Build a car now one runs in, win class and you are in. Most AH cars do not care about anything other then the shootout.
Ok with that being said how does Super Gas 9.90 work and Super Street 10.90 or any fixed index class? How does qualifying work for these types of classes?

As far as super classes go. They are an all run. They are laddered after first round based on closest to index. First round is random pairing.
As for the horsepower factor of the new cars. It wouldn't, doesn't take a genious to get them closer then they are.
I'll give you an example using Jeff Teuton's 5.9 and John Grays 72 Nova 350.
John's Nova is rated 278HP by NHRA. It's has 10.0-1 compression, .390/.410 lift cam, 1.94-1.50 valves and a quadrajet.
Jeff's 5.9 is rated 275HP. It's just shy of 11.5-1 compression, has a .490/.490 lift cam, 2.02-1.60 valves, aluminum heads, a tall single plane intake and large throttle body.
Now just by looking at the numbers it's quite easy to see the 5.9 should greatly outpower the 350. Yet the 350 was rated higher. I don't think NHRA should factor it 325 right out of the box. However, 295-300 rating would still make that a fast car and not be throwing it in the face of everyone else running in those classes. I'm glad it's so soft. We're thinking about building one for our 68 Dart to run in SS/GT.
As for the blown Fords. Who knows what to factor them.
