What is a "safe" distance between the inside of the tire and outside of the frame rail ? I need to "move" my tires IN,,,they are too close to the lip of the quarter panel.....and the tire is rubbing/hitting the lip of the quarter panel I should be able to do this with changing the backspacing on the rims,,,,, Right now,,,I have a Weld Prostar 12 x 15 rim,,,with 6.5" of backspacing.... Right now,,I have 2" of "room" between the inside of the tire,,,to the outside of the frame....(see pic") If i was to change to 7.5" of backspacing,,,that would leave me 1" on the inside of the tire to frame....is that ok...too close ... just right....?? Trying to avoid shortening the rear end to gain the clearance

you can always get a mr.gasket wheel spacer up to 1/4" to bring it out a little. sounds to me you got the same axle width as me. thats what i do, wheel spacers are your friend.

Why a wheel spacer... ? I measured what i have now,,,and it looks like it should fit with 1" of clearance at the inside of the tire to the frame,,,,and about 3/4-1" at the quarter panel.... Was your clearance less than 1" on the inside portion of the tire ? thanks, Doug ps,,,i think,,,but am not sure,,,but the current Dana may have been modified prior to going in the car,,,so i might not be "stock" spacing...i would have to ask the previous owner where the Dana came from,,and if it was modified any before the initial install.

Jim, I have a 31 x 10.5 x 15W tire, Current rim is a 12 x 15 with 6.5 BS Not sure if my Dana is "stock" width,,or if it's been modified previously (length wise) Caltracs If i measured correctly,,,,just changing my backspacing to 7.5" should get me the room i need.... Tom, that's going to leave a mark,,ouch,,lol I wasnt breaking stuff then like i am now,,,

Hi Doug sorry to hear you are having problems.I still think the leaf springs are tired. but to answer your questions. the dana i got from my uncle which came out of a 78 3/4 ton ford truck.he already had it cut down pretty good.there was enough length left to make it the same length as the 8-3/4 that cam out of the car. Doug have you measured the rims yet? because i thought they are already 15x10 with 7.5 inches of back spacing. but it has been so long ago i don't remember. I know a M/T 29.5x11.5x15 will fit the car perfect if you wanted to go that route. sorry if i am not much help.Bobby
doug here is a pic of the car when i had the 29.5 slicks on it. Doug
