I had always assumed the pumpkin in my 8 3/4" rear (489 type)was not a sure grip cuz the wheels spun in opposite directions when the rear was jacked up. Now that I have the 440 running decent enough, I was pleased to see tonight that I was leaving two strips down Can someone set me straight?

If the wheels turn opposite directions when you turn them in the air it is open. The traction was such that both wheels broke loose for a while but I would lay odds that one quit before the other or would have if you would have stayed in it long enough.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

If you can turn one rear wheel by hand, with the car in gear, or if the wheels turn opposite, you do NOT have a sure grip, or else it's pretty "broke." I spose it's possible that the clutches could be so worn that you could turn one, but I've never seen one that bad.

You might just be lucky---you might have a car with just the right transfer and tires to hook up with both tires.

Yeah but they won't spin the wheels one in each direction. Unless you know of one that I don't.

They all do as far as I know. Point being he is wondering if he has a ssure grip being he laid 2 strips even if turning the wheels with the car in the air the wheels turned opposite directions. The rest of us are saying that under the right conditions an open rear will lay down 2 strips for a short distance before 1 quits.

yah i understand what the rest of you is saying. and yes even a cooked suregrip will still move
both tires in the same direction. the "poor man posi" thing is a trick back in the day to
make a open diff act like a suregrip (nothing to do with welding the spider gears).

how was it done never heard of that .

as far as the wheels turning in opposite directions , if the conetype is spent it's possible , but if you put enough power to it even an open can lay 2 strips , i have done it with a 340 when not taking off exactly straight .

my V6 dakota would put down 2 even patches and it was an open diff.

I had to do a 4000 rpm clutch drop to get both spinning though. if I went around a corner or was just driving normally on wet roads, only 1 would spin.

what is this poor mans posi you speak of?

I think there talking about the old trick of shimming the side gears into the spiders on an open diff. It would create enough bind to actually mimic a sure-grip to a degree. Would also wear very fast.

FWIW, a GM Corporate "Gov-Loc" will spin the wheels in the opposite direction when raised, but will lock up at a certain RPM.

Doesnt help this siutation though does it?

Will a detroit locker spin in the opposite direction when raised? I understand those are available now for an 8.75 rear.

Gov-Locs are junk.

I used to care but....... things have changed

actually, its preloading the pass rear with a air shock. nice trick, works well.
